Book Rec & Review – The Clecanians by Victoria Aveline (Books 1-7 + Novella)

What would you do if you were kidnapped by aliens and ended up in a matriarchal society planet where (1) the population is facing extinction due males largely outnumbering females, (2) you are forbidden from returning to earth, (3) you are forced to enter into 3-month long marriages with males of your choosing (to increase the likelihood of more Clecanian children being born), and (4) all the males have rigorous husband training for their wives’ benefit? Would you get the hell out of dodge? Or start your life anew in this strange new planet? That is the premise of The Clecanians by Victoria Aveline.

Each novel in the series follows the story of a human female that has been abducted from earth by a secret Clecanian organization seeking to find a “breedable” species with whom Clecanians can increase their population numbers. Once the Clecanian government in Tremanta (the capital) comes to learn of the kidnapped human females, a race ensues to assimilate them into Clecanian society. Each heroine approaches their predicament differently: some wish to return home and others wish to start a new life in Clecania. However, they all wish to avoid forced marriages and becoming broodmares to Clecanian men. Throughout each of their unique journeys, however, they come to find love and spicy matehood.

Aveline does a great job of worldbuilding without leaving the reader overloaded and exhausted. I applaud Aveline for making the heroines AND heros vastly different and diverse. The heroines are wonderfully modern without being clique, and the heros are swoon-wrothy alpha barbarians that “fall first”.

Overall, The Clecanians is a solid seriess. It will have you feverishly reading and giggling. Lovers of alien alpha barbarians unite!
