Book Review: Galactic Kings by Anna Hackett

The Galactic Kings series by Anna Hackett follows four Earth women and the powerful alien rulers they encounter across a vast and dangerous galaxy. Each woman, after unexpected circumstances land them far from home, must navigate newfound powers and alliances to survive, ultimately finding love with fierce alien kings battling for their planets.

Galactic Kings is a good choice for readers who enjoy stories of powerful warrior heroes and resilient human heroines coming together to fight for their corner of the galaxy. Is the dialogue a bit cheesy at times? Yes. But it is still solid and sexy read.

She’s rescued by Rhain, a warrior king battling his tyrannical father, who suspects Mal is a spy. As Mal develops strange new powers from Zhalto’s environment, she and Rhain must combine their strengths to save their friends and protect the planet.

Tropes: alien hero, warrior hero, alpha hero, royal hero, human heroine, strong heroine, futuristic, fated mates & forced proximity.

Grade: B

Mallory was the stereotypical “bad-ass” heroine. I wished she had stepped out of that template a bit more!

Emperor by Anna Hackett

After a starship test goes wrong, Dr. Poppy Ellison awakens on an alien world, injured and disoriented, only to learn she’s infected and transforming into a shapeshifter. Her only ally is Brodin, the powerful wolf-like emperor of Damar, who battles his own inner beast while protecting his people from his father’s evil ambitions. As Poppy’s new abilities emerge, she and Brodin are drawn together and must unite their strengths to protect the Damari from a deadly plot that threatens to destroy them all.

Tropes: alien hero, warrior hero, alpha hero, royal hero, human heroine, sweet heroine, futuristic, grumpy vs. sunshine, shifters & fated mates.

Grade: B

Having “wolf shifters” in this corner of the galaxy felt rather random. That said, we enjoyed Dr. Poppy Ellison’s more understated character and her cute romance with the gruff Brodin.

Captain of the Guard by Anna Hackett

Fierce shapeshifter Annora Rahl and resilient warrior Captain Thadd Naveri, rivals with undeniable chemistry, must set aside their differences to stop an evil king threatening to enslave their planetary system. Tasked with infiltrating enemy labs to save allies on the planet Taln, Annora and Thadd are forced to confront their mutual attraction while racing against time to protect Taln—and themselves—from a terrifying enemy.

Tropes: alien hero, warrior hero, alpha hero, royal hero, alien heroine, strong heroine, futuristic, enemies to lovers, shifters & fated mates.

Grade: B

Captain of the Guard felt like a side-story to the series in that it doesn’t follow one of the brothers/kings. That said, Captain Thadd Navery and Annora’s “enemies to lovers” love story helped to spike up the temperature of this series.

After two years of alien captivity, Evie Mason is free but left with a frightening new power she struggles to control. When she meets Graylan, the powerful Conqueror of Taln, their intense connection awakens both passion and a shared power between them. As Graylan prepares for a final battle against his tyrannical father, he and Evie must unite their abilities to protect Taln, its people, and each other in a climactic showdown.

Tropes: alien hero, warrior hero, alpha hero, royal hero, human heroine, tortured heroine, futuristic, insta-love, forced proximity & fated mates.

Grade: B+

Best in series. Conqueror delivered just a bit more on the angst and romance, and the battle scenes were impressive!
